Acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine is a system of medicine that is comprised of acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition and exercise. It has been in existence for over 2,500 years and is becoming widely practiced in Europe as well as the United States.
The origin of TCM is based on the Taoist philosophy which views a person as an energy system in which body and mind are unified, each influencing the other. Chinese medicine emphasizes a holistic approach that treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. Acupuncture is built on the principle that within the body is a system of energy pathways, known as meridians, through which flows the universal energy or life force called Qi (chi). It is the free flowing of this energy that promotes health and well-being. When the energy is blocked or disrupted, dis-ease occurs. Through the insertion of fine, sterile needles, at specific points along these pathways, the energy is stimulated. Western science has discovered that acupuncture points have unique bioelectrical properties and stimulating them causes definite physiological reactions in brain activity, blood pressure, heart rate and the immune system.
